Stuffed Animal Patterns - where to start!
If you are sewing your first ever stuffed animal pattern you will most likely already have MOST of the general toy making supplies and stationery that you will need in your sewing box and stationery draw!
If you are new to sewing don’t worry - you may need to buy some basic sewing tools, but not many!
If you are new to sewing don’t worry - you may need to buy some basic sewing tools, but not many!
Let me list some basic toy making supplies for sewing stuffed animal toys:
- Scissors - I have 2 pairs, one for cutting fabric and a separate pair for cutting paper.
- Needles – I use smaller ones for hand sewing and larger ones for sewing on beads for eyes and button jointing.
- Pins - I use pins to hold fabric in place before sewing. The best pins for toy-making are strong, sharp pins.
- Fabric Marker - you can also use a pencil or permanent marker.
- Fabric – I like to use strong fabrics as toys given to children will get a lot of wear but toys can be made from all sorts of fabrics - cottons, synthetic fabrics, corduroy, velvet, felt, fur fabrics.... almost anything!
- Thread – I use sewing machine thread and embroidery threads for sewn on features like eye's, noses and mouth features.
- Toy eyes (and facial features)- Use 2 strands of embroidery thread for sewn on face details, making sure the stitches are small, neat and even. The pattern instructions will guide you on how best to make the eyes, but feel free to experiment as there are so many ways to do toy eyes!
- Craft Glue/paper glue - I use paper glue to stick my pattern pieces to firm card.
- Firm Card - I like to use about 160gsm card to make my pattern piece templates.
- Toy Stuffing - I use polyester fiberfill most of the time.
F.A.Q. - Do I need a sewing machine?
You don’t NEED a sewing machine, the toys CAN be sewn by hand it just takes much longer,
so I guess this depends on how patient you are...
